Malabar Coast Mushroom Strain Summary
The Malabar Coast strain of Psilocybe cubensis was discovered in the humid coastal regions of southwest India. It’s assumed that it had been used in India for religious and healing practices, but there is shockingly little information on its use in the nation of its origin. The Malabar Coast mushroom strain has been popularized primarily by western mycology communities and psychonauts alike, and has found a home as one of the favorite strains in our catalog.

Research Factors
Difficulty
Malabar Coast is quite easy to work with. It’s vigorous, contaminant-resistant, and not too dissimilar from other popular strains like Golden Teacher. Working with Malabar Coast spores should be pretty approachable for a beginner.
Spore Features
These spores are sub-ellipsoid on 4-spored basidia with dark purple to brownish coloring. Caps are generally smaller and don’t tear away from the partial veil until they reach full maturity. Even then, the membranous annulus (ring) on the partial veil will remain attached even after full maturity, causing spore deposits to be lighter than other varieties. The spores you’ll receive are healthy and perfectly ready for microscopy.
Rarity
The Malabar Coast mushroom strain is a pretty rare strain that would make a unique and fun addition to anyone’s collection. While it may not be as rare as, say, Treasure Coast, Malabar Coast is much harder to find than most other popular strains. Additionally, finding spores that are truly pure and viable Malabar adds a layer of difficulty to your sourcing efforts. We’ve been supplying these since ’08 with a team of mycologists that ensure every last batch is 100% contaminant-free and contains the strain we say it does.
Cultural Significance
Malabar Coast mushrooms have their roots deep in the coastline of southwest India. However, it has really found its home here in the USA among Indian-Americans and mycologists with a curiosity for international fungi. It will be interesting to watch this mushroom climb in popularity over the next few years!
