Strain Origin
P. mexicana Jalisco strain is the very same as the sacred and revered Teonanacatl (God’s Flesh) in the Aztec language. It was rediscovered in 1956 by Roger Heim and given to Dr. Albert Hoffman to be used in the first ever chemical isolation of psilocybin and psilocin.
The Jalisco strain of P. mexicana was collected from wild specimens that were found somewhere between Guadalajara and Talpa. Although the precise location is unknown, it is believed to be only a few miles west of Guadalajara.
Jalisco strain is known for producing potent sclerotia also known as “philospher’s stones” or “magic truffles” in culture. For this reason it is highly unlawful to attempt to cultivate this variety of truffle producing mushrooms, as doing so will result in the formation of magic truffles with naturally high amounts of psilocybin and psilocin, which are both illegal substances.
Difficulty
The Jalisco strain is a great way to delve into the world of truffle producing mushrooms, as it is quite quick and rewarding to research.
Spore Features
The spores of P. mexicana are dark purple-black. The spores are subrhombic to subellipsoid on 4-spored basidia, and purple/black in deposit. They are fairly light spore producers.
Rarity
This strain used to be commonly mixed up with Psilocybe galindoi as they are both found in Mexico, however genetic testing has shown that galindoi is in fact a variety of P. tampanensis. Thus, P. mexicana is a unique and rare species of its own, and this Jalisco strain is one of a number of wild varietals that exist in nature.
