Albino magic mushrooms

With a diverse range of appearances, strains, and species, magic mushrooms are an incredible category of fungi. While every psilocybin-containing mushroom is unique, the ones that stand out the most have to be those of albino mushroom strains. With their stark white appearance and often odd morphologies, these mushrooms look magical and otherworldly, captivating mycologists around the world.

But these mushrooms weren’t just found. They were carefully bred by mycologists with a passion for psychedelic mushrooms. Learn all about albino magic mushrooms with the expert mycologists at Eden Shrooms.

Albino vs Leucistic: What’s the Difference?

While there are many pale magic mushroom strains, not all of them are albinos. In order to be considered a true albino, it must contain no pigmentation at all. If it contains just a little pigmentation, then it is known as a leucistic mushroom.

However, albinism is typically a recessive trait in mushrooms. That makes creating a true albino strain harder, as you have to have two fully albino parents to consistently produce albino magic mushrooms.

Today, we’re going to focus on albino mushrooms (with only one exception). Let’s look at some of the top albino mushrooms on the market today!

1. PF Albino: The First Recorded Albino Mushroom Strain

Unfortunately, a lot of documentation of strain development and discovery is lost. We don’t know exactly when the first albino mushroom was discovered or what it was called, but we know which strain is the first ever recorded: PF Albino.

PF Albino is the result of experimentation with the PF Classic strain of Psilocybe cubensis by cultivator Robert McPherson in the late 80s. The “PF” comes from “Psilocybe Fanaticus,” McPherson’s preferred pseudonym. It looks almost identical to PF Classic; the only difference is that the PF Albino lacks most pigmentation.

2. Albino Penis Envy: Iconic Appearance With Potent Genetics

While it isn’t the first albino strain, Albino Penis Envy (APE) is one of the most unique looking. This albino magic mushroom was bred by mycologist John Workman in the early 2000s as a crossbreeding challenge. Using a mushroom spore syringe, he injected Penis Envy mushroom spores into a substrate colonized with a PF Albino live culture. This first flush began Workman’s journey to create a mushroom that had the genetics responsible for both PF Albino’s coloring and Penis Envy’s morphology.

It took many generations of trial and error, but the strain he created would go down in history as one of the most famous magic mushroom strains ever. Not only do these albino magic mushrooms look incredibly unique, but they also have a reputation for being particularly potent for a P. cubensis mushroom. Plus, high-quality Albino Penis Envy spores are readily available for mycologists who want to study this strain for themselves!

3. True Albino Teacher: Golden Teacher’s Albino Sibling

True Albino Teacher (TAT) magic mushrooms are the albino version of Golden Teacher mushrooms. This albino mushroom strain is often mixed up with the White Teacher mushroom strain, which is a leucistic strain. The difference, while subtle, is that White Teachers have a splash of cream on the cap, while TAT mushrooms have absolutely no pigmentation at all.

The credit for this albino magic mushroom’s creation goes to two Shroomery users in the early 2000s: Jik Fibs and Wombat. Each of these hobbyists independently isolated the albino gene in Golden Teacher by extracting spores from and carefully propagating GT mushrooms that happened to grow with an albino mutation. These isolates have both been used to breed unique and niche strains like Ghost mushrooms and Yeti mushrooms, which come from Fibs’ isolate.

4. Albino A+: The Classic Misnomer That Stuck

Technically, the Albino A+ strain isn’t a true albino magic mushroom. Like White Teacher, it’s leucistic. Specifically, it’s a leucistic mutation of the A+ mushroom strain. However, its pigmentation is faint and only seen on mature shrooms, so it’s no surprise the albino name stuck!
