About This Strain
The “ATL” in this strain’s name is a reference to Psilocybe atlantis, the species this strain was originally classified as. It was believed to be a unique species, as there were no similar species known in the state of Georgia, the region it was first found in. Samples were later sent to Psilocybe mushroom expert Gaston Guzman. Although Guzman did have his doubts about the mushroom’s classification, he had no alternative classification. ATL-7 was considered to be similar to Psilocybe galindoi (galindii), a species previously believed to only be found in Mexico. However, modern genetic testing has uncovered that this strain is actually a variety of Psilocybe tampanensis, a species that was previously only known to grow wild in the state of Florida.
Our Psilocybe tampanensis spore collections are direct descendants of a strain of P. tampanensis known for consistently producing larger-than-average sclerotia, which are also known as “philosopher’s stones” or “magic truffles.” This earned it the name ATL-7 Large Sclerotia!
Important Research Factors
Difficulty
This strain is very beginner-friendly. It’s known as a great introduction to the world of truffle-producing mushrooms.
Spore Features
The spores feature dark purple or black coloring. They’re subrhombic to subellipsoid on 4-spored basidia, and purple/black in deposit. They are fairly light spore producers.
Rarity
Before genetic testing was available to mycology hobbyists, this strain of truffle-producing mushrooms was considered to be quite rare. It’s now known to be a member of the P. tampanensis species native to Florida. However, ATL-7 is the only P. tampanensis strain in Georgia, and its light spore production means it remains uncommon in both the wild and in the collections of mycologists.
